Pay It Forward

Hubby is in Boston with two granddaughters. The closest place to eat (kosher) is over an hour away and too far to expect delivery.
Walking to the boat for their tour, he spies a van with young adults wearing kipot (skullcaps) and eating pizza. He walks over to them, says, “Shalom aleichem,” (“peace be with you,” used as a traditional greeting to a fellow Jew), and asks where they got the pizza.
They reply, “You want some?” The boys give my trio a whole pie, left over from a camp visiting the harbor. A PAY IT FORWARD MOMENT FROM THESE BOYS!
I’ve been inspired to pay it forward (and be aware of others who might be doing that, as in this story) ever since my mother received anonymous money put into our mail slot every week after my father became paralyzed. It helped us to survive.

A Very Happy Birthday

And then I was on the bus this afternoon in Beit Shemesh, and a mother motions for the bus to stop even though the driver is only supposed to drop people off at this point on the ride from Jerusalem and not pick up passengers.
No problem, though. Apparently, this was all worked out ahead of time.
“Thanks, Rotem,” says the mom to the driver as the door opens and a little boy boards the bus.
Turns out the woman was the driver’s wife; the boy was their son.
The child had to get to a birthday party. But the mom was stuck at home with a crying baby. Driver drives down a few blocks, pulls up at a corner, shuts off the bus and says to the passengers: “Just a second. I’m just dropping him off.”
He runs into a house with his son. Comes running back out. But, in the meantime, the mother of the birthday boy is giving him some snacks to take back to his passengers.
He takes a few packages. We all decline. He starts up the bus and we all go home.
“Thank you so much,” the driver shouts to us. “You just made my son and his friend with the birthday very happy.”

Thank You Tante Dina

“May you have a day filled with much simcha, much bracha, and much shalom.” ~ Dina Machla bat Eliezer Blaustein, 4 Av 5767
I don’t remember where we were going, but we desperately needed a babysitter we could trust for our four lively lads. It was for at least an overnight. Dina B or Tante Dina as everyone’s kids called her offered.
“Wow, thank you! How much do you charge?”
She looked at me with something between gentle censure and pity that I even asked the question. “You can’t afford me,” she said.
“Uh, what?”
“What is the safety of your kids worth? You don’t have that kind of money. No charge. It will be my pleasure.”
I’ve never met anyone like Dina Blaustein, zt”l, before or since. No one has. Though she never had a husband nor children, she will be missed long, long after she left the world.
