Celebration of Life
On the bus tonight, the bus driver made a strange request. He asked a boarding passenger to lower his mask.
And when the passenger lowered his mask to uncover his face, the driver burst into tears. “I thought it was you!” he exclaimed.
I was too far back in the bus to understand what was going on, so I approached the driver and passenger to get to the bottom of it.
“He saved my life,” the driver shouted, with such emotion that he started to embrace me. They had served together in the 2006 Second Lebanon War.
“I owe my life to him,” said the driver. The passenger seemed stunned. I tried to get details. What exactly happened to them in that incident? Have they seen each other since 2006? But the two became so immersed in conversation, I couldn’t get any answers.
What I did manage to hear was that by the end of my ride, the two former IDF comrades had arranged a double date with their wives and the driver persuaded his dispatcher over the phone to give him the rest of the shift off to allow for the “celebration of life,” as the driver called it, to take place tonight.
As I got off the bus at my stop, the last thing I heard the bus driver say was: “God Almighty, I never expected to live that day, and I can’t believe that we’ve met up like this.”

Pray for One Another
Jewish man and Muslim man are sitting on a sidewalk bench. They seem to be praying together.
Here’s what was happening. It was actually a random meeting. They had never met before. They are both a bit older. Needed a breather from their daily routine and errands.
And they got to talking about some friends who are not well. They were both praying for each other’s friends. I recognized the Jewish prayer for the sick; I am not familiar with the Muslim’s prayer that he was reciting.
I’ve never before heard the Jewish prayer said for people whose names are Mohammed, Ahmad and Abed. And amid the Arabic language of the Muslim prayer, I picked out the Hebrew: the names Moshe, Esther, and Yosef.
May God answer all the prayers for a speedy and full recovery for all those who need it.

Own Your Scars
The young man was still not married, and not so young anymore. He would be set up with one girl after another. But after the first date, girls just didnโt want to see him again. They didnโt tell him why, but the large scar on his cheek was just hard to look at. He knew this. He felt short-changed sometimes. After all, he really was an amazing fellow, with a big heart and sterling character.
So he went to visit the great sage, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky. โRabbi,โ he says tearfully, โI donโt know what to do. I donโt want to be lonely. I want to be a husband, and a father.โ And he told him that he is certain that his physical appearance is the problem. That scarโฆThe saintly Rabbi suggested to him softly, โthe next time you meet a girl, bring up your scar in conversation! Tell her about it, how you got it, how it makes you feel.โ Own it, speak of it with confidence, and without shame, the Rabbi was telling him. An interesting idea, to which the fellow, though taken aback, committed himself.
A couple of months later someone suggests that he meet a girl. She is described to him as very special, outgoing, and vibrant, a kind and sweet person. But what worried him was that they also told him that she was exceptionally beautiful. This worried him. โIf she is as attractive as people said, then she will not be interested in a damaged person like me.โ Can you imagine his pain? He comforted himself: โPeople exaggerate; perhaps she is average!โ So he took her out.
She was gorgeous. Oh well.
And then they started talking. She was charming, sweet, and open. And though he would have preferred to do just about anything else in the world, he awkwardly burst out with, โI am sure that the first thing you noticed about me was this horrible scar that I have on my cheek. Rabbi Kanievsky told me to share the story about this scar on the very first date. Will you listen to my story?โ He went on to tell her that when he was 20 years old, he was heading home from yeshiva one night, and the streets were dark and deserted. Suddenly, he heard a cry. A young girl, screaming! He saw a man running after the young Jewish girl as she was fleeing and crying out in fear. Without thinking, he immediately gave chase, and with a pounding heart, he actually caught the predator, and held him down long enough for the girl to escape. But in the struggle the man took out a knife โ and though he survived, his face never would look the same.
โThat is the story of my scar.โ
She was shuddering, wiping tears from her eyes. He was surprised at the strength of her emotions, until she said to him, โI never thought that I would find you. Since that day, I have wondered who had heroically saved me? Is he okay? I wish I knew his name. Will I ever have the opportunity to thank him?โ
Today, they are happily married.
Own your scars. They are your greatest strengths. They are a constant reminder of who you truly are, how much youโve grown, and what youโre striving for.
~ Rabbi Shmuel Reichman
