Life Vest Inside has had the very good fortune of finding writers willing to share their Kindness Stories with us. One of our special recurring writers is David Jablinowitz, Op-Ed Editor at Jerusalem Post, who is famous for his “bus stories.”

Show That You Care

Central Bus Station in Jerusalem this evening: I could sense that something was up.
I wasn’t sure how old she was: still in high school or perhaps older. She seemed troubled, not focused on her surroundings.
I approached her without making it dramatic. I asked her if she was alright. She clearly was relieved to have the opportunity to express herself.
She said she was running away from home. She had a knapsack, but it wasn’t all that large.
She said that she was getting on the bus about to leave for the Jordan Valley. It was soon departing from the platform next to where my bus to Beit Shemesh picks up passengers.
Then she didn’t want to talk anymore. She said she was going to get a snack.
That gave me the opportunity to board her bus. The door was still closed. Only the driver was inside. I knocked on the door. He let me in.
I told him about one of his passengers about to get on. I described what she looked like and said she would be carrying a knapsack.
He thanked me and told me that he’s been through this before, situations in which he got in touch with social workers or medical personnel. There was even one time, he said, when in coordination with all sides including the runaway youth himself, he drove the teen back to Jerusalem after finishing the route to the Jordan Valley.
“We bus drivers have to be many things,” he explained. “Sometimes it’s just showing someone who is troubled that you care.
“Then he asked me: “How did you figure out that something wasn’t right regarding this girl?”
“Just a hunch,” I said. To which he replied: “You could be a bus driver.”
Praying that it worked out well tonight.

"Orly Wahba is an amazing speaker, storyteller, and entertainer! Not only was she our keynote speaker at our virtual event in March, but she was also our co-emcee. And boy, did she ever knock it out of the park! When I first met Orly online, I knew a little bit about her work and had seen her videos, but once we started to collaborate, it was evident that she walks her talk. Orly was so easy to work with, perhaps because our work is aligned, and we share similar dreams. On some level, the concept of kindness is so simple. It’s just common sense; I mean how many ways can we encourage people to be kind, right? Who can’t get behind the idea of kindness? The way Orly spoke with her stories, energy, and authenticity, including her impromptu reactions to what was happening at our event, made the simple idea of kindness come alive. Our attendees loved it as evidenced by active and engaged online chat throughout the entire event. If I were to create a word cloud about Orly, I would say she is smart, articulate, passionate, thoughtful, organized, dependable, creative, gracious, kind, supportive, collaborative, caring, and mission-driven! Thank you so much, Orly, for this experience – before, during, and after!"

We Are All One People

The bus was filling up. A soldier gets on. Looks around and sees that there aren’t many seats available.
He sits down next to a haredi high school student. She is reviewing some religious studies. I can’t see for sure what subject, but the soldier is showing interest.
The student has a different idea. She closes her notebook and takes out a math book of some sort, and asks the soldier for help.
This leads to a broader discussion between the two of them. He agrees that he should know more about religious studies. She acknowledges that her parents don’t know some of the secular subjects “as well as they should,” though she maintains that the situation is changing in her sector.
He helps her with her math; she reviews for him yesterday’s weekly Torah portion, which she notes “continues from previous weeks to deal with interpersonal relationships and therefore should speak” to the soldier.
Toward the end of the bus ride, he asks about her high school; she asks about what he does in the IDF.
As we all get off, he says to her: “Thank you for sharing your world with me.” She replies: “We are all one people.”

Language of Kindness

Bus stop: Woman gets up and asks a standing soldier to please take her seat. She’s with two small children.

“Your week will be harder than mine,” the mom says to the soldier. Soldier looks at the small children, and retorts: “I remember when I was that age. I’m not sure my week will be harder than yours.”

Mom insists. Soldier sits down.

Turns out he’s a lone soldier from France. He makes a WhatsApp video call to his family and tells them about the kind gesture the Israeli mom just made at the bus stop.

The mom doesn’t speak French. (Neither do I.)

But apparently he told his family that Israelis are so kind to their soldiers. The family back in France responds with all sorts of praises to the woman for taking care of their son/brother even as they are so far away.

The language that all of us understood was when the soldier’s family, his parents and a couple of younger siblings, applauded, saluted the woman at the bus stop, and threw kisses to her.

She threw kisses to them and saluted them. “Kisses are an international language,” she shouted back as the soldier translated to his family.

Another internationally-known language: “Shalom!” they shouted at each other.
