Life Vest Inside has had the very good fortune of finding writers willing to share their Kindness Stories with us. One of our special recurring writers is David Jablinowitz, Op-Ed Editor at Jerusalem Post, who is famous for his “bus stories.”
Celebration of Life
On the bus tonight, the bus driver made a strange request. He asked a boarding passenger to lower his mask.
And when the passenger lowered his mask to uncover his face, the driver burst into tears. “I thought it was you!” he exclaimed.
I was too far back in the bus to understand what was going on, so I approached the driver and passenger to get to the bottom of it.
“He saved my life,” the driver shouted, with such emotion that he started to embrace me. They had served together in the 2006 Second Lebanon War.
“I owe my life to him,” said the driver. The passenger seemed stunned. I tried to get details. What exactly happened to them in that incident? Have they seen each other since 2006? But the two became so immersed in conversation, I couldn’t get any answers.
What I did manage to hear was that by the end of my ride, the two former IDF comrades had arranged a double date with their wives and the driver persuaded his dispatcher over the phone to give him the rest of the shift off to allow for the “celebration of life,” as the driver called it, to take place tonight.
As I got off the bus at my stop, the last thing I heard the bus driver say was: “God Almighty, I never expected to live that day, and I can’t believe that we’ve met up like this.”

Invite a friend to accompany you the next time you go for a walk or run outside. It will be an awesome way to catch up and get some exercise in at the same time!
Positive Affirmation
I may have large boots to fill, but I am ready to go on the ride to fill those boots and be even greater!
