HMWIP
“How do you do it?” I asked him. “How do you always seem to have a smile on your face?”
My jovial friend, who seems to have mastered the sense of calm, contentment, and joy all of us are desperately after, looked up with twinkling eyes.
“HMWIP.”
“Whip who? What?”
“HMWIP,” he said again, before spelling it out.
“H-M-W-I-P.”
“What does that mean?”
“Well, throughout the course of my day, I stop to ask myself, ‘HMWIP,’ which stands for ‘How Much Would I Pay?’. If I just finished eating lunch, I think about how much I would be willing to pay for the opportunity to eat food with my mouth if that capacity should ever be taken from me and my eating experience confined to a feeding tube. If I am washing my hands after using the restroom, I think, ‘HMWIP!’ – if I had some kind of infection that prevented my body from functioning properly, how much would I pay to be able to use the restroom as I just did? If I look up at the clouds in the sky above, I think about how much I would be ready to pay for the great gift of sight, should that capacity be taken away from me. This little exercise helps me to realize that the things we take for granted in our frantic pursuit of wealth, joy, and contentment, are themselves the very treasures we seek. And as I reflect on how incredibly wealthy I am, how many unimaginable and priceless privileges my life is saturated with, I can’t help it but smile.
”Wishing all of my friends the most wonderful, gratitude-filled day!

Happy Aliyah Day
For me, aliyah is standing at the bus stop on Shazar at 9:30 at night, watching five people help a young woman collect the change that had spilled out of her purse all over the bus steps and the street. No one chastised her, insulted her, made fun of her. No one stole her money. Everyone patiently waited or bent and helped. One young man got on his knees to make sure there wasn’t a single shekel that had rolled under the bus. The driver waited until the cleanup was completed and everyone was safely on board.
Yes, I know. Not every bus driver would have reacted this way. Not every Israeli crowd or individual would have behaved. And there are nice and thoughtful people all over the globe. But treating that other person as if she is your sister is so much more common here than in any of the countries in which I’ve lived that it is clearly woven into the fabric of this place and this people.
There is a lot more that I love about Israel. But the coming Home part, the feeling of being embraced by a crazy, quirky, slightly dysfunctional but always caring family is the sweetest aspect of my 12-year-old aliyah.
Happy Aliyah Day, family! I love you.

SAD AND GLAD
Unfortunately, often because someone can speak and hear, they might think they are good communicators. I don’t think so! Effective communication requires much more. In addition to sincerity, empathy, kindness, mindfulness and compassion; good communication requires the appropriate use of Skills and Tools. The most popular Skills and Tools would include: Active Listening, Listening Pads, Asking Questions, Positive Phrasing & Words, Written Agendas, Visual Aids, and others. One tool often forgotten is the Tool/Skill known as ‘Sad and Glad’.
Sad and Glad is appropriately used in most any ‘unfortunate’ situation in which you wish to acknowledge a problem/mistake and then gracefully ‘move on’ to a solution. When an ‘unfortunate’ situation (mistake, error, blunder, etc.) happens it is appropriate to express understanding and empathy. Expressing such will appear that you are caring. A simple and sincere apology works well. Once the problem is acknowledged, it is valuable to ‘move on’ to a solution and not get lost in blame, guilt, worry, whining or winning. Sad and Glad is very useful in many situations both personally and professionally.
An example of Sad and Glad can be applied to food service. A customer is delivered a meal that is faulty for some reason and the server wants to acknowledge and apologize for the problem and then ‘move on’ to a solution.
Customer, “My fish is overcooked”
Server, “I am sorry (Sad) that your fish was overcooked AND I am glad you told me, I will correct it immediately with what you ordered”
SAD AND GLAD
SAD – Expressing understanding and acknowledgement will show another you are listening and empathic. An appropriate and sincere apology works well. Specifically stating, “I am sorry (Sad) about…” shows empathy.
AND – And is a conjunction and it ‘connects’ or ‘moves on’ from the misfortune. The opposite of AND is the word ‘But’ which is a negation. i.e. “I like you BUT…” The word And is very powerful and positive. And is a ‘transitional’ word.
GLAD – Stating a solution is vital. Being helpful and seeking solutions will move from the misfortunate on to a solution and an improvement in the relationship (hopefully).
The development of a new behavior will require time and Energy. 60-90 repetitions within 21 days may begin to have a positive impact upon your life and the lives of those with whom you communicate.
The use of Sad AND Glad can be used in many personal and professional situations. It is putting good Words and Actions towards others.
At a minimum, please eliminate the use of the word But.
