Motivation Monday

Life Vest Inside has had the very good fortune of finding writers willing to share their Kindness Stories/Articles with us. One of our special recurring writers is David Jablinowitz, Op-Ed Editor at Jerusalem Post, who is famous for his “bus stories.”

Happy Aliyah Day

For me, aliyah is standing at the bus stop on Shazar at 9:30 at night, watching five people help a young woman collect the change that had spilled out of her purse all over the bus steps and the street. No one chastised her, insulted her, made fun of her. No one stole her money. Everyone patiently waited or bent and helped. One young man got on his knees to make sure there wasn’t a single shekel that had rolled under the bus. The driver waited until the cleanup was completed and everyone was safely on board.
Yes, I know. Not every bus driver would have reacted this way. Not every Israeli crowd or individual would have behaved. And there are nice and thoughtful people all over the globe. But treating that other person as if she is your sister is so much more common here than in any of the countries in which I’ve lived that it is clearly woven into the fabric of this place and this people.
There is a lot more that I love about Israel. But the coming Home part, the feeling of being embraced by a crazy, quirky, slightly dysfunctional but always caring family is the sweetest aspect of my 12-year-old aliyah.
Happy Aliyah Day, family! I love you.

Kindness Quote

“Human beings need to have only one act: human kindness. This small act can change a person’s life with only compassion. Kindness begins when you speak words from the heart. Kindness consists of love and the act creates a ripple. Constant kindness can change everything. Only kindness allows you to develop compassion of the deepest significance.”
