While recovering from a serious medical procedure Lee met a loving family caring for their father dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). Lee’s daily routine came to include a visit with the man, his wife and four children. Soon Lee discovered the ultimate gift of kindness and that sometimes it isn’t always clear who is giving the gift to whom.

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
In 2013 Paul Kalanithi was a young resident in neurological surgery when he was diagnosed with stage-4 lung cancer. Suddenly he was thrust into the role of patient and with a new perspective, Kalanithi began sharing his very personal questions and thoughts on living, illness, dying and medicine. His autobiography details his experiences as a doctor, patient, new father and husband as he faces a terminal illness with this unforgettable and life affirming reflection. Published posthumously, the final word is left to his wife who shares her thoughts on Kalanithi’s final journey.
