Life Vest Inside has had the very good fortune of finding writers willing to share their Kindness Stories/Articles with us. One of our special recurring writers is David Jablinowitz, Op-Ed Editor at Jerusalem Post, who is famous for his “bus stories.”
A Second Chance
The winds were overpowering in Jerusalem today, in addition to the rain. I could barely keep my face up as I walked down the street. When I returned to the office, I told my colleagues that I wasn’t sure we were in Kansas anymore.
Yet, there was an older woman walking down the street near me, braving the storm, and seeming undaunted. Frankly, it was surreal.
What was even more surreal was that an ambulance pulled up to the curb. A medic opens the door and shouts: “Savta, what are you doing out in weather like this? It’s dangerous! Come, we’ll take you home.”
It turned out it really was her grandson. But she seemed spooked by the idea of getting a ride home in an ambulance.
Also nearby, a cop was starting to issue a driver with a parking ticket. He stopped what he was doing, however, and says to the woman: “God sent you an angel, your grandson. Go with him, and get out of this weather.”
She was still hesitant. So the cop says to her: “Fine, come with me.”
She agreed. And the cop says to the driver who was about to get a ticket: “I’ve got to take her home. You can thank her for saving you a hefty amount of money. Next time, don’t park here.”
The cop drives off with the grandmother, the ambulance drives off with the grandson, and the parking violator drives off having saved some money and being given a second chance.
