Motivation Monday
Life Vest Inside has had the very good fortune of finding writers willing to share their Kindness Stories/Articles with us. One of our special recurring writers is David Jablinowitz, Op-Ed Editor at Jerusalem Post, who is famous for his “bus stories.”
EXPRESSING GRATITUDE
Gratitude not expressed is like wrapping a present and not giving it. Expressing Gratitude is important at many levels and yields many benefits. At one time, I had the goal to maintain an ‘Attitude of Gratitude’. It became apparent to me that having an attitude is only the beginning. It is critical that we put our beliefs and attitudes into action. In the case of Gratitude, it needs to be expressed!
The expression of Gratitude can take many forms. Appreciation and Gratitude may be demonstrated in words and/or actions. Verbal Gratitude is always appreciated but often forgotten. There is magic in a written expression of Gratitude. A written note may be an email, note card or letter. The magic of the written word is that the ‘author’ has a thought and transfers it into the written word. In some special way, the thought/Energy of a written word lays dormant until the word is read and every time the word is read, the thought/Energy of the author comes alive. Every time the word is read, it conveys the Energy of the original thought. A special note card with a message of Gratitude makes the expression of Gratitude more ‘physical’. Gifts of Gratitude are also very much valued.
Gratitude has no ‘deadline’ or timeline in which it has to be expressed. We often want to express Gratitude in a timely manner; however, Gratitude is always appreciated. Recently, I had gotten a note from a former student of over 40 years ago. I was deeply moved by the acknowledgement.
Action Item: Take some time and create a list of the people who have touched you, who have had a positive influence in your life and write them a note of Gratitude. You do not have to do the ‘complete’ list all at once but work on it a little at a time. Also, develop the behavior to always express Gratitude at a minimum with words of thanks and then as appropriate, send a written note.
