The Daily Kindness Digest #1821

Motivation Monday

Life Vest Inside has had the very good fortune of finding writers willing to share their Kindness Stories/Articles with us. One of our special recurring writers is David Jablinowitz, Op-Ed Editor at Jerusalem Post, who is famous for his “bus stories.”

A Heartwarming Exchange of Gifts

At least one of the drivers with whom I’m in touch by phone every so often is Muslim. He called me this evening to tell me about his day today, driving for several hours on Purim.
He accumulated nine packages of Mishlochei Manot [gifts given between Jews during the holiday of Purim] from passengers, despite his protests, telling them he shouldn’t be accepting the food packages from the people he serves.
“I don’t want gifts; I’m just doing my job,” he told them.
To several of the passengers he also made the point that he is not Jewish and not observing the holiday.
“No one cared,” he told me this evening. “A couple of people said to me it made no difference – a good deed is a good deed.”
He said he was especially touched when one of the passengers said to him: “What difference does that make? You are one of us. We are living our lives together.”
One other passenger said to him: “Hey, it’s Ramadan soon. I’d be honored if you ate some of this, one evening when breaking your fast.”
The driver says that, in fact, he is saving a couple of packages of cookies from the Mishlochei Manot for some meals after the daily fast during Ramadan.
I could hear his smile when he said to me: “All the food seems to have good kashrut supervision.”
