Life Vest Inside has had the very good fortune of finding writers willing to share their Kindness Stories with us. One of our special recurring writers is David Jablinowitz, Op-Ed Editor at Jerusalem Post, who is famous for his “bus stories.”

Own Your Scars

The young man was still not married, and not so young anymore. He would be set up with one girl after another. But after the first date, girls just didn’t want to see him again. They didn’t tell him why, but the large scar on his cheek was just hard to look at. He knew this. He felt short-changed sometimes. After all, he really was an amazing fellow, with a big heart and sterling character.
So he went to visit the great sage, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky. “Rabbi,” he says tearfully, “I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to be lonely. I want to be a husband, and a father.” And he told him that he is certain that his physical appearance is the problem. That scar…The saintly Rabbi suggested to him softly, “the next time you meet a girl, bring up your scar in conversation! Tell her about it, how you got it, how it makes you feel.” Own it, speak of it with confidence, and without shame, the Rabbi was telling him. An interesting idea, to which the fellow, though taken aback, committed himself.
A couple of months later someone suggests that he meet a girl. She is described to him as very special, outgoing, and vibrant, a kind and sweet person. But what worried him was that they also told him that she was exceptionally beautiful. This worried him. “If she is as attractive as people said, then she will not be interested in a damaged person like me.” Can you imagine his pain? He comforted himself: “People exaggerate; perhaps she is average!” So he took her out.
She was gorgeous. Oh well.
And then they started talking. She was charming, sweet, and open. And though he would have preferred to do just about anything else in the world, he awkwardly burst out with, “I am sure that the first thing you noticed about me was this horrible scar that I have on my cheek. Rabbi Kanievsky told me to share the story about this scar on the very first date. Will you listen to my story?” He went on to tell her that when he was 20 years old, he was heading home from yeshiva one night, and the streets were dark and deserted. Suddenly, he heard a cry. A young girl, screaming! He saw a man running after the young Jewish girl as she was fleeing and crying out in fear. Without thinking, he immediately gave chase, and with a pounding heart, he actually caught the predator, and held him down long enough for the girl to escape. But in the struggle the man took out a knife — and though he survived, his face never would look the same.
“That is the story of my scar.”
She was shuddering, wiping tears from her eyes. He was surprised at the strength of her emotions, until she said to him, “I never thought that I would find you. Since that day, I have wondered who had heroically saved me? Is he okay? I wish I knew his name. Will I ever have the opportunity to thank him?”
Today, they are happily married.
Own your scars. They are your greatest strengths. They are a constant reminder of who you truly are, how much you’ve grown, and what you’re striving for.

The Kind Bus Driver

And then this happened…It’s my first ride back on the bus after a week-plus away due to my mother’s passing. Beautiful morning. Nice scenery outside the bus window.
A friend was taking the bus as well. I told her it was nice that it worked out that we’d meet. Another friend called me right after I got on the bus. I was grateful that he was checking up on me.
And then… the bus broke down.
“Is this the new era of my bus rides?” I thought to myself.
But we made it. A second bus picked us up, completing the ride from Beit Shemesh to Jerusalem.
And then in Jerusalem – I’m off the bus, walking near the entrance to the city, which is backed up with traffic. A bus is standing still at an intersection. A younger woman is helping an older woman cross the street. The older woman has a walking stick. The younger woman is carrying a package for her.
The bus driver opens his door. “I’m off duty,” he says to the two women. “Can I take you somewhere?
“The older woman has a great retort: “Even I, with my stick, can get to where I have to go faster by walking than by going with you in this traffic.”
Driver: “But you remind me of my mother, of blessed memory. She passed away last year. The traffic will clear up. If you don’t mind, I’ll be happy to take you.”
The older woman agrees. The younger woman goes off on her way.
Meanwhile, a fourth-grader is running by. He hears the conversation and decides to join the get-together. “I’m late for school; can you drive me also?”
Driver doesn’t agree. But the woman says: “Hold my package and you can join the ride.”
The driver, woman, and fourth-grader are all aboard. The traffic starts moving.
And I go to the office, thinking of the driver who lost his mother last year. She must be proud of her son helping an older person even as he was supposed to be on a break from his work shift.

The Blessing of a Bride-To-Be

I was taking a walk just now. A young woman is excitingly telling her friends with whom she is eating outdoors at a restaurant that she’s just become engaged to marry.
I walk by and look toward the commotion. They explain and ask if I’ll take a photo instead of the selfie they were trying.
I oblige. One of the friends asks me: “Is that a mourning beard?”
I nod. The bride-to-be then responds by putting her hands on my head, and blesses me: “May you celebrate many happy occasions!”
She adds: “You know that when a woman getting married gives you a blessing, it always comes true.”
