Reflections

“If put to the pinch, an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness.” ~Elbert Hubbard

When I sat down and began thinking about the theme for this month – LOYALTY – oddly enough, one specific scene from Forrest Gump popped into my mind. For those of you who have never watched this incredibly impactful film, it’s worth taking 2 hours and 22 minutes to watch ASAP.

In this short scene, Forrest Gump is a soldier in the Vietnam war when his unit is attacked. Read More >>

Act of Kindness

Loyalty is one’s ability to stick with people through the good times and the bad. Loyalty is a choice and one that we get to choose every day at every moment. Will we only look out for our own self interest? Or will the choices we make be based on integrity and staying true to who we are and what we know to be right. Over this month, adapt a mindset of loyalty. Show loyalty to friends, family, and loved one by being honest, trustworthy, supportive, and generous. But remember to always maintain healthy boundaries with those around you so you can be loyal to them in a productive way.

Songs of the Month

Loyalty shows its face when we are in the midst of challenges that we never expected.

“When you’re not strong, I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on.” We’ve all had times when we’ve felt like we don’t have the strength to go on, to push through. It’s precisely in those moments of hardship when loyalty and friendship are needed most. Be that someone that someone can lean on.

Books of the Month

The Namesake – Jhumpa Lahiri – Lahiri’s novel provides an accurate portrait of coming to terms with who we are (and making sacrifices along the way). Gogol Ganguli undergoes a classic tale of assimilation and how to draw lines between his Indian heritage and the American life beckoning him.

The Slap – Christos Tsiolkas – The Slap shows how a single action can change the way people think about how they live, what they want, and what they believe forever.

The Priory of the Orange Tree – Samantha Shannon – This book inspires us to be brave, to be loyal, and most of all, to be true to ourselves.

Being Loyal Is Cool – Sonia Mehta – Nicky and Noni are a bit thoughtless sometimes. They even forget to be loyal to their best friend, Jojo. But Jojo doesn’t hold it against them. What does he do? And what do Nicky and Noni learn?

Fred Stays With Me! – Nancy Coffelt – Fred Stays with Me expresses and addresses a child’s concerns, highlights the friendship between child and pet, presents a common ground for parents, and resolves conflict in a positive way.

A Sick Day for Amos McGee – Philip C. Stead – Friends come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. In Amos McGee’s case, all sorts of species, too! Every day he spends a little bit of time with each of his friends at the zoo, running races with the tortoise, keeping the shy penguin company, and even reading bedtime stories to the owl. But when Amos is too sick to make it to the zoo, his animal friends decide it’s time they returned the favor.
